The Chronicles of Avorai

The Gift and the Theft

Finally, after much planning the adventure begins!

After waking in a misty forest and finding a strange shine with a featureless “statue” at its center. Each person was offered a gift, in their own separate dream, after being told by the “statue” that they had been chosen as an agent of the change that would soon visit their world. The gift took the form of a small dragon of various colors, that melded with them and now resides as a tattoo on some part of their body. When they awoke the tattoo was still there.

On the final day of the festival celebrating Prince Essendor’s coming of age, Gippetto Pinhearl Barrow Rocktoe III was performing for King Hestin, Essendor, and the crowd of festival goers. Meanwhile, men dressed in black with red trim attacked the king with plans on assassinating him in his meeting room. Damon and Jonathan fought their way through the royal palace, while Gippetto mounted a daring roof assault.

The king was rescued but Essendor was taken by another team of the men in black. So the group set off into the sewers in pursuit. They emerged from the sewers and followed up the far side of the river just in time to see the villains escaping by carriage. Quick to follow, the group was set upon by more of the villains in black.

They continued following the road to the village of Rivermead. It was confirmed that the carriage had passed through and thanks to Gippetto’s fame, horses have been promised in an effort to save the prince… as soon as they can be gathered from whoever can spare them.

A Summary of Events

The following summary of events have been compiled from the journals and writings of Gippetto Pinhearl Barrow Rocktoe III in order to replace the lost adventure logs of that most famous of groups. You know the one we mean.

The group continued tracking the foes in an effort to save the prince. Before long the three would be heroes were fighting their way through more men garbed in black. They found the prince but not in time to spare him torture. Upon searching the bodies of the slain it was discovered that these men were members of The Shattered Hand, a group dedicated to the downfall of Mithrilan.

En-route to return the prince, the group is sidetracked by the sound of a woman screaming. They come upon a half-orc unsuccessfully trying to calm the woman down.(This is, of course, the now famous Bonesnappa Halforcen) The group discovered, to their relief that Bonesnappa was a trained monk from the monastery in the nearby mountains and that he had a dragon mark as well. Before the prince escorted the frightened woman back to the capital, she relayed a story of goblins preforming strange ritual sacrifices.

After dealing with the goblin cave, and witnessing more signs of the returning magic within, they returned to the capital and were rewarded by the king. The prince left for his front line military service, Damon and Jonathan returned to their duties for the king, while Gippetto and Bonesnappa decided to travel around Mithrilan together for a time.

Six months passed and, without warning, each of the four heroes were arrested and locked in the dungeon. After a short time a hooded figure came to them and revealed himself to be Prince Essendor. A plot had been uncovered. Members of The Shattered Hand had chartered a boat to take them to the nearby Pillar of Twilight. The arrests were just a ruse to keep the discovery under-wraps. The group made haste to the dormant volcano, in the caldera of which stood the Pillar. While making their way up one side of the volcano, The prince led a group of his own up the other. Undead warriors began to rise in an effort to block their passing. The heroic group would not be stopped so easily.

At the top of the volcano they came face to face with the Pillar it’s self. Swirling black, purples, blues, and dark reds. Something about it beckoned to them and against all common knowledge, they were able to pass through the seemingly solid barrier. Inside the found an ancient temple in a style they had never seen before. Inside they found the lone surviving member of The Shattered Hand’s expedition about to remove an oddly floating stone from its pedestal. But before they could interfere a silver streak shot down from the sky pinning the man to the floor. The figure perched atop this man was in fact Essendor but he had faintly glowing, silver incorporeal wings stretching from his back. He drew some sort of red energy from the pinned man and when done the man fell limp in death. The stone was recovered and it was revealed that the prince had also been granted one of the dragon marks, silver spread across his back.

A Summary of Events (Part 2)

The following summary of events have been compiled from the journals and writings of Gippetto Pinhearl Barrow Rocktoe III in order to replace the lost adventure logs of that most famous of groups.

Unsure of the stones significance, but sure that the Shattered Hand wanted it, the group left the stone in the royal vault for safekeeping. For a short time, the adventurers returned to their normal lives.

In NestleNook, Gippetto discovered that the Dwarves had closed off their kingdom to all outsiders. Naturally he gathered his friends to investigate. Bonesnappa’s knowledge of the mountains proved useful in leading the band to a cliff face that would allow access to Glor’val.

The city-kingdom (Dwarves are weird) was revealed to be scarred by battle and the group was met by devils. Beings of this type had not been seen since The Seal had been placed. While battling their way toward the king’s hall, where Gippetto suspected any survivors would be holed up, Bonesnappa was separated from the group. While separated he was forced to go one on one with what we now know as Bearded Devils. Though he was beat to within an inch of his life, Bonesnappa was victorious. During this time Gippetto had suffered a serious wound during an ambush.

The party was reunited finally made their way to the dwarven king, Bron Silverbeard. There they found the remnants of the warrior caste protecting the civilian refugees and the royal family. The party was informed that the devils had poured fourth from the lower levels so, of course, they set off to deal with the threat right away. Except for Gippetto who, due to his injury, was forced to stay behind.

In the lowest level, Jonathan chanced upon a secret room where he found a bow, string, and quiver. When the three pieces were used together, the arrows would be charged with electrical energy and would return to the quiver a few moments after impact. Shortly after, they came to a room where two devils were discussing invasion plans. One had the form of a woman and was disturbingly beautiful while the other was huge with the wings of a bat. The two devils quickly departed down along the tunnels that connected Glor’val to Nezzalban via underground river.

The band gave chase and confronted the two villains in Nezzalban. The huge one “tore” a hole in reality and retreated to the abyss while the female stayed behind to deal with the adventures. She proved no match for Bonesnappa’s newly invented Devil’s Snare maneuver (He invented it during his solo devil fight). She was turned over to the prince for questioning, but there was no time for celebration.

Information had turned up as to the whereabouts of the Shattered Hand’s leader.
